Country guide

United Kingdom

The United Kingdom brings together four distinct nations—England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland—within a compact, varied travel landscape. Expect historic cities, rugged coastlines, moody uplands, excellent museums and a strong pub, music and literary culture. Distances can look short on a map, but regional rail and road journeys often take longer than expected.

London Underground: fun and surprising facts you probably didn’t know

Discover fascinating facts about the London Underground, the world’s oldest metro system and a true icon of the British capital.

Read the story

The UK is best approached as a collection of places rather than one uniform destination. London offers major museums, theatres, neighbourhood markets and dense layers of history, while Edinburgh, Cardiff, Belfast, Manchester, Liverpool and smaller cities each have their own cultural rhythm. Outside urban areas, the appeal shifts to walking routes, stone villages, castles, beaches and open landscapes.

Plan around geography and transport. England’s main cities connect relatively well by train, but rural Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and remote coastal areas reward slower itineraries and sometimes a car. Weather is changeable, daylight varies sharply by season, and popular attractions may need advance booking. Pub meals, local markets and independent cafés can provide a more grounded sense of place than rushing between famous landmarks.
