North Macedonia

North Macedonia suits travelers who prefer landscapes and everyday life over polished spectacle. Skopje brings Ottoman, Byzantine and modern layers together; Lake Ohrid offers calm water and old churches; mountain regions, vineyards and village kitchens reward slower itineraries. Plan around the heat, allow extra time for roads, and carry denars beyond the main cities.

North Macedonia is compact enough for a varied week, but its roads and mountain terrain reward patience. Skopje is a useful starting point: walk from the Old Bazaar and Kale toward the river to see Ottoman traces, brutalist architecture and contemporary cafés in one afternoon. The city is energetic without requiring a packed schedule. Outside the capital, the pace changes quickly. Ohrid combines a busy lakeside promenade with quiet lanes, hillside churches and swimming spots; visit early or late in the day in summer. Lake Prespa is less developed and.

For a more outdoors-focused trip, Mavrovo, Pelister and Šar mountain areas offer hiking, while Tikveš brings vineyards and long, dry afternoons. Food is central to the experience: look for tavče gravče, grilled peppers, ajvar, fresh salads, burek and local trout. Macedonian hospitality can be generous, but service is not always fast or standardized. Leave room in the itinerary for late buses, changing mountain weather and spontaneous coffee.
