Greece

Greece rewards travelers who leave room for contrast: ancient sites and contemporary city life, busy ferry hubs and quiet mountain villages, long lunches and active days outdoors. Athens makes a strong starting point, while the mainland and islands offer very different rhythms. Plan around distances, seasonal ferry schedules, and the heat of midsummer.

The Ultimate Kos Travel Guide: Beaches, History & Local Secrets

Explore the beauty of Kos, where ancient history and stunning beaches await you. Discover your perfect Greek island getaway.

Read the story

Greece is more than a string of summer islands. Athens brings major museums, layered neighborhoods, and lively food culture, while the mainland opens into mountain landscapes, monasteries, vineyards, and archaeological sites that are easier to appreciate with extra time. Crete, the Peloponnese, Epirus, and northern Greece each have distinct food traditions and scenery.

Island-hopping is rewarding but should be planned realistically. Distances are larger than they look on a map, ferries can be affected by strong winds, and some routes operate mainly in high season. For a slower trip, choose one island group or combine an island with a mainland region. Spring and early autumn are especially comfortable for walking, ruins, village visits, and long meals outdoors; July and August suit beach time if you can handle the heat and crowds.

Know before you go

Useful context, without the checklist overload.

Getting around

Use metro and buses in Athens, KTEL coaches on the mainland, and ferries between islands. Domestic flights save time on longer routes; ferry schedules become less frequent outside summer.

Entry & visas

Greece is in the Schengen Area. Visa rules depend on nationality; visa-exempt visitors can generally stay up to 90 days in any 180-day period.

Tipping

Tipping is not compulsory, but rounding up or leaving about 5–10% for good restaurant service is appreciated. Check whether a service charge is already included.

Tap water

Tap water is generally safe in mainland cities and many islands, but taste and supply vary. On smaller or remote islands, ask your accommodation or use bottled water if advised.

Electricity

230 V, 50 Hz; Type F plugs. A universal adapter is useful for travelers from countries using different plug types.

Planning

Frequently asked questions.

Yes, especially if you combine Athens with one mainland region or island group. Avoid packing too many islands into a short itinerary because ferry connections can be long and seasonal.
