Horses, forest trails, carriage rides, yoga, local food and the kind of silence that has become increasingly difficult to find — Tmbin’s Barn in Slovenia’s Karst region is less about checking into accommodation and more about slowing down.
There are places where you arrive with a list of things to do. And then there are places that quietly convince you to stop doing quite so much.
Tmbin’s Barn belongs to the second category.
Set in the peaceful Slovenian Karst, surrounded by forest, horses and open countryside, this family-run hideaway was never designed to become a conventional tourist property. Instead, it has grown into an intimate place where families, couples and small groups can step away from busy routines, spend time outdoors and reconnect — with nature, with each other and, perhaps most importantly, with themselves.
Children quickly forget about screens. Parents rediscover the luxury of having nowhere they need to be. Days can involve horses, cycling, yoga and local wine, or simply sitting beneath a tree and listening to the birds.
We spoke with owner Taja about the story behind Tmbin’s Barn, why the family deliberately wants to keep it small, and what makes Slovenia’s Karst such a rewarding destination for travellers looking for something quieter and more personal.
In this story
How did the story of Tmbin’s Barn begin?
The story began with a wish to honour the generations who lived on this property before us. We wanted our ancestors to be proud of the way we were preserving and appreciating the beauty of this place.
Our goal was to protect its heritage while also giving it a new purpose and bringing new life into it. Stories naturally change from one generation to another, but the spirit of the property remains, and preserving that is extremely important to us.

My husband’s family restored the building. Initially, the idea was simply to keep it in good condition and arrange the entire property in a way that respected the cultural and natural heritage of the Karst.
Our family property is called Pri Tmbinovih, a name connected with the history of the estate, our family, its traditions and values.
We called the building hlevček because there was once a barn here. Since most of our guests come from abroad, we chose the English name Tmbin’s Barn.
From there, everything developed very naturally. The way we live, think and connect with the surrounding landscape is now reflected in everything we offer our guests.
What can guests expect when they first arrive?
The first things they usually notice are the peace, nature and horses.
Almost immediately, you get the feeling that time moves a little more slowly here. You can finally breathe deeply.
Tmbin’s Barn isn’t simply accommodation. We want it to be an authentic experience where individuals and families can genuinely relax.
We believe that one of the greatest luxuries today is simply having uninterrupted time together.
Children settle into that rhythm surprisingly quickly. They don’t need screens or organised entertainment. They have nature, animals and their parents’ presence.

They often become friends with our children too, which makes the experience feel even more personal and creates a genuine sense of being welcomed into family life.
That personal approach is probably our greatest strength.
We consciously want to remain small because we want enough time for every guest. We want to know who they are, understand what they enjoy and adapt their stay whenever possible.
Here, guests shouldn’t feel like room numbers. We want them to feel like part of the story.
What does an ideal day at Tmbin’s Barn look like?
The ideal day is whatever the guest wants it to be.
Some people arrive because they need complete peace and rest. Others want to explore the Karst actively. That means every stay looks slightly different.
A morning might begin with yoga outdoors, followed by a walk or cycle through forest trails.
Horse lovers can spend time with Lipizzaner horses or experience the landscape from a traditional horse-drawn carriage.
We also love recommending nearby caves and lesser-known places around the Karst that visitors might otherwise miss.
Afternoons can revolve around local food, while one of our favourite evening experiences is a carriage ride through the landscape, passing lavender fields and continuing towards a viewpoint near the quarry.
At sunset, it becomes an unforgettable place.
The evening might finish with Karst wine, locally produced cured meats and a long conversation.

But some of the most memorable days are much simpler.
Guests can sit underneath a tree, listen to birds, watch the horses and enjoy the silence without feeling that they should be doing something else.
That simplicity often becomes the part of the experience they remember most.
Which experiences do guests talk about most after returning home?
Interestingly, every member of the family usually leaves with a different favourite memory.
Adults often mention yoga, tastings or visiting the quarry. Children almost always remember the horses, riding and carriage trips.
But what matters most isn’t necessarily one specific activity.
Guests remember how they felt here.
Recently, a group of women who joined one of my yoga weekends wrote to tell me how much they appreciated the exercises, meditation and opportunity to connect more deeply with themselves.
That is really where the magic lies.
Each person seems to find something different here that speaks to them personally.
Families return home realising that they created memories together that may stay with them for years. The same is true for women who come here specifically to make space for themselves and their inner world.
Why does the experience work particularly well for families?
Parents relax when they see that their children are happy, free and, above all, safe.
Our property is in a quiet environment away from traffic, so children have space to explore, play outside and simply be curious.
Most of them quickly fall in love with the horses.
They can feed them, care for them, learn about them, ride or join a carriage trip.
They spend hours outside exploring the forest, watching animals and making new friends — often with our own children.

These experiences are very simple, but they are becoming increasingly rare.
While the children are absorbed in nature and animals, parents finally have some space for themselves.
Some choose yoga or meditation. Others go for a walk, enjoy a glass of Karst wine or simply sit quietly and listen to nature.
For us, the best family holidays are those where everybody gets a chance to relax — children through play and nature, and parents through time for themselves and each other.
Sustainability is an important part of Tmbin’s Barn. What does that mean in practice?
For us, sustainability isn’t a trend. It’s simply how we live.
We live in the Karst and we want our guests to experience the region in the same way local people do: authentically, simply and in close connection with nature.
Whenever possible, we introduce guests to local producers and craftspeople because we believe that the real character of a destination lives in its people.
Visitors might meet a beekeeper, cheesemaker or local winemaker, or eat at family-run restaurants serving seasonal Karst dishes made with ingredients from the surrounding region.
We also recommend places such as the quarry, the small church on Gura, lavender fields and other lesser-known locations that tell the story of the Karst.
Horses and carriage rides are particularly important to us.
Travelling through the landscape this way naturally slows you down. You notice more, and you experience the environment with a greater sense of respect.
To us, sustainability means creating experiences that support the local community while preserving what makes the Karst special for future generations.
Slovenia is famous for its mountains and lakes. Why should travellers consider the Karst?
The Karst is a landscape that doesn’t reveal everything immediately.
That is part of its appeal.
It remains peaceful, authentic and relatively untouched. There isn’t a feeling of mass tourism here. Instead, there is space — space to walk, cycle and slow down.
We always recommend exploring on foot or by bicycle, following forest paths and routes between vineyards and stopping in small Karst villages along the way.
There are also more unusual experiences.
You can search for truffles deep in the Karst forests, take a horse-drawn carriage along hidden woodland tracks or walk near the place where the Reka River disappears underground.

The region is also deeply connected with food and wine, and its gastronomy changes throughout the year.
That makes every season feel slightly different.
Of course, you should try the famous Karst prosciutto, while wine lovers shouldn’t leave without tasting Teran or the indigenous Vitovska Grganja.
It is this combination of landscape, tradition, people and food that makes the Karst so distinctive.
Many travellers arrive expecting only a short stop and end up wishing they had stayed longer.
Who is Tmbin’s Barn best suited to?
Anyone who wants to step away from the pace of everyday life and reconnect with nature.
Most of our guests are families with children, couples and individuals who appreciate peaceful surroundings, animals, a homely atmosphere and authentic experiences.
We also organise yoga weekends for small groups of women who want time for themselves, deeper relaxation and an opportunity to reconnect with themselves in nature.
Horse lovers, hikers and cyclists also feel very at home here.
And then there are travellers who are simply curious about discovering a quieter, lesser-known side of Slovenia.
Because we want to give each guest personal attention and maintain the intimate atmosphere of the property, we accept only a limited number of visitors.
For that reason, we recommend booking several months ahead, particularly for summer, long weekends, school holidays and scheduled yoga retreats.
Do you plan to expand in the future?
Our goal isn’t to become bigger.
We want to become better at creating meaningful, authentic experiences.
Staying small allows us to dedicate enough time and attention to every guest and maintain genuine personal contact.
In the future, we would like to develop more boutique retreats for small groups of women, families and individuals who need a break from everyday routines.
Through nature, yoga, horses and authentic Karst experiences, we want to create a place where people can stop, rest and reconnect with themselves and the people they care about.
We believe in simple things: a genuine smile, a warm welcome, nature, silence and a feeling of belonging.
If guests leave feeling more rested, more fulfilled and carrying memories they want to return to, then we know we’ve achieved what we set out to do.
Mindful Vacation Tip
Don’t overplan your stay in the Karst. Leave at least half a day without reservations, attractions or a fixed route. Explore a forest trail, stop at a small winery, spend an afternoon around the horses or simply enjoy the property. In a region built for slow travel, having less on your itinerary can easily become the best part of the trip.
Good to know: Tmbin’s Barn is particularly suited to families, couples, horse lovers and travellers looking for nature, slow travel and intimate experiences rather than a traditional resort stay. Because the property intentionally hosts a limited number of guests, booking well ahead is recommended for summer and holiday periods.
