Lauterbrunnen Valley: Switzerland’s magical valley of 72 waterfalls

Discover Lauterbrunnen Valley in Switzerland, home to 72 waterfalls, Alpine peaks, scenic trains, and breathtaking mountain views.

About 70 kilometers southeast of Switzerland’s capital, Bern, lies one of the most beautiful valleys in Europe: Lauterbrunnen Valley. Framed by towering cliffs and snow-capped Alpine peaks, it’s a place that looks like it was made for postcards and movies. The combination of dramatic rock walls, lush meadows, and crystal-clear waterfalls makes this valley a dream destination for nature lovers in both summer and winter.

The valley of 72 waterfalls

The name Lauterbrunnen means “many springs,” and it’s easy to see why. The valley is home to an astonishing 72 waterfalls, each more impressive than the last. These cascades have inspired poets, painters, and travelers for centuries, including the likes of Goethe, who found inspiration for his poem Song of the Spirits over the Waters here. In 2001, the Lauterbrunnen Valley became part of the UNESCO World Natural Heritage of the Swiss Alps.

One of Europe’s tallest waterfalls

In the heart of the village of Lauterbrunnen, surrounded by traditional Swiss chalets and steep cliffs, stands one of Europe’s highest free-falling waterfalls – Staubbach Falls. Plunging nearly 300 meters, it creates a misty curtain that sparkles in the sunlight. A marked footpath leads to a viewing gallery behind the waterfall, offering a rare chance to experience it up close. The trail is open from June to October, and at night the waterfall is beautifully illuminated.

The three mountain giants: Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau

Towering above the valley are three iconic Alpine peaks – Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau – often called the “three beauties” of the Bernese Alps. From Lauterbrunnen, you can take a train or a cable car to reach Jungfraujoch, also known as the Top of Europe. The train journey itself is a marvel, winding through tunnels and snowy slopes until you reach Europe’s highest railway station at 3,454 meters.

If you’re more adventurous, take the cable car from Stechelberg to the Schilthorn summit. The rotating panoramic restaurant Piz Gloria at the top is famous as a filming location for the James Bond movie On Her Majesty’s Secret Service. The view of the Alps from up there is simply unforgettable.

Scenic trains and mountain cable cars

Lauterbrunnen’s location makes it easy to explore the surrounding villages and peaks by train or cable car. From the valley, take the Wengen train up the eastern side to the sunny car-free village of Wengen, accessible only on foot or by rail. It’s a peaceful stop with beautiful hiking trails and a transfer point for those heading toward Jungfraujoch.

On the opposite side of the valley lies Mürren, another car-free mountain village, reached by cable car. The journey offers breathtaking views of the entire valley. From Mürren, you can continue to the top of Schilthorn for more Alpine magic.

Getting there and getting around

Lauterbrunnen is easy to reach by car or train from Bern, Interlaken, or Zurich. However, parts of the valley are car-free, so the best way to explore is by public transport. Local trains, buses, and cable cars are well connected, making it simple to move between villages and mountain peaks.

If you’re planning a visit, try to stay at least two days to fully experience the valley’s natural beauty, scenic hikes, and cozy Swiss hospitality.

A place that captures the spirit of the Alps

Lauterbrunnen Valley is one of those rare places that feels untouched by time. Whether you’re chasing waterfalls, riding scenic trains, or simply listening to the echoes of the mountains, this corner of Switzerland promises an unforgettable journey through nature at its most majestic.
