Crossbasket Castle: Scotland’s fairytale hotel just 20 minutes from Glasgow

Stay in a 14th-century castle just 20 minutes from Glasgow. Discover Crossbasket Castle’s history, luxury suites, Michelin dining, and Scottish charm.

Not all castles in Scotland are relics of the past. Some are living, breathing spaces that have reinvented themselves for the modern traveler while holding onto their centuries-old soul. Crossbasket Castle, tucked into the rolling landscape of South Lanarkshire just outside Glasgow, is one such place. Once home to noble families, industrial innovators, and even schoolchildren, it has been reborn as one of Scotland’s most luxurious castle-hotels.

A castle with a storied past

Records trace Crossbasket Castle’s history back to the 14th century, when it was owned by the Hamiltons of Cadzow, one of Scotland’s most influential families. Over the centuries, the castle changed hands many times, most notably when it was purchased in 1818 by Charles Macintosh – yes, the inventor of the waterproof raincoat. Later, it served as a children’s home, an education centre, and even a religious hub before falling into disrepair.

Today, after a meticulous restoration, Crossbasket has reclaimed its grandeur. Original 17th-century features have been brought back to life, while the striking 16th-century four-storey tower suite – once left in ruins – now offers guests a unique place to stay.

Modern luxury in a medieval shell

Crossbasket Castle now operates as a five-star hotel with nine individually designed rooms, each blending period charm with modern comfort. For those seeking extra privacy, two Lodges on the estate have been transformed into self-catering accommodations, complete with hot tubs, saunas, and steam rooms – perfect for groups or families who want the castle experience with their own space.

Its elegant Grand Ballroom is a highlight, often hosting weddings and special events beneath glittering chandeliers. Food lovers, meanwhile, will be drawn to the castle’s restaurant, overseen by Michelin-starred chef Michel Roux Jr, where Scottish ingredients meet French finesse. Plans for an expanded spa, 40 new rooms and suites, and a cocktail bar further enhance the castle’s reputation as a destination in its own right.

A perfect base for exploring Glasgow and beyond

One of Crossbasket Castle’s greatest appeals is its location. Just 20 minutes from the buzz of Glasgow city centre, guests can easily combine a castle stay with urban adventures. Glasgow is known for its thriving music scene, Victorian architecture, and world-class museums like the Kelvingrove Art Gallery.

Closer to the castle, the River Calder winds past the estate, offering peaceful walks, while the village of Blantyre holds its own historical significance as the birthplace of legendary explorer David Livingstone. And, of course, this being Scotland, dramatic highland landscapes, whisky distilleries, and more castles are never far away.

Why stay at Crossbasket Castle

Staying at Crossbasket isn’t just about booking a room – it’s about stepping into centuries of history and seeing how old-world elegance can blend seamlessly with contemporary luxury. Whether you come for a romantic getaway, a once-in-a-lifetime wedding, or as a base to explore Glasgow and Scotland’s heartland, Crossbasket Castle delivers a taste of Scottish grandeur that feels both timeless and very much alive.
